The Piedras Blancas Rookery is the only elephant seal rookery in the world that is easily accessible, free, and open to the public every day of the year. No reservations are needed. The rookery is located seven miles north of San Simeon on Highway 1.
It's molting season at the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery! Starting in June, San Simeon's beaches have welcomed the return of young male seals. As the molting season continues through July and August, older males will make their way back to the beaches. The number of seals at this time may be small, but the males keep the beach busy as they practice sparring.
Plan your trip to experience elephant seal birthing and breeding at the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery. Between December and February, mother elephant seals give birth to their young right on the beach at the Elephant Seal Rookery in San Simeon. Stand on the cliffs and watch the circle of life unfold.
