In the Forest Under Night by Matthew Stewart - This is a scene from the tale by J.R.R. Tolkien that appears in both The Silmarillion and in a longer form in The Children of Hurin. Gwindor is a Noldor Elf lord captured in "The Battle of Unnumbered Tears". At this catastrophic defeat Gwindor was kept alive as a slave. He escaped into the forest Taur-nu-Fuin, which means "great forest under night". He lost a hand in his escape, and carries a Feanorian lamp.

Nienor climbed Amon Ethir to await Mablung’s return, but it was Glaurung at the hilltop. "He [Glaurung] put forth his power, and having learned who she was he constrained her to gaze into his eyes, and he laid a spell of utter darkness and forgetfulness upon her, so that she could remember nothing that had ever befallen her, nor her own name, nor the name of any other thing; and for many days she could neither hear, nor see, nor stir by her own will."

The Death of Glaurung

The Death of Glaurung

At this unfortunate moment, "Níniel", who feared for her husband's life, went out and found him apparently dead. Glaurung then set off his hidden weapon against Túrin - he removed Nienor's amnesia with his last words. Realising she had married her own brother and was carrying his unborn child, she committed suicide by throwing herself into the ravine at Cabed-en-Aras..
